Products for more sustainability on the go
Who knows this? The trip is planned long ago, the washed fruit and vegetables roll into the backpack and the sandwiches end up in a lunch box. At best.
The other option is: everything is in short supply, the children are tired and annoying. There is no time for a snack, so we go shopping at the nearest supermarket. At least picking up sandwiches from the meat counter calms me down - just a large piece of paper to wrap the 4 rolls in. But wait. That is also wrapped in foil. Damn. Then we quickly get drinks - in tetra packs for the children, in PET bottles for us. I feel guilty. But I calm myself down by thinking that it is an exception.
Just yesterday the documentary "Blue" was shown on ARTE and even though I am familiar with the images of floating plastic islands and turtles entangled in fishing nets, it is still shocking what we do with our plastic consumption. Camilo Beach in Hawaii is so dirty that there are more plastic particles than sand. 15 - 20 tons of plastic waste wash up here every year and are removed by volunteers. Isn't that shocking?
My calm conscience from above is disappearing. No exceptions. At least for me.
In my private life, I think a lot about sustainability and zero waste and try to avoid packaging as much as possible. This starts with shopping. I take fruit bags, large shopping bags and glasses with me when I go shopping to save on packaging. Aluminum foil and cling film have long been leading a rather lonely existence in the cupboard, and I also use reusable products for baking paper.
I am happy to be able to work with people who care at least as much about our environment as I do. When selecting products for our small shop in Gnigl, Angelika always considers sustainability. The vast majority of Wohnkram products are made in Europe, many items even here in Austria and Germany. But more on that soon!
